Description

This course will prepare the student for future work-related tasks requiring a variety of writing skills. The student will review fundamentals of grammar and usage, and will develop abilities in using a dictionary effectively.

Objectifs

  • Use a dictionary to obtain information about spelling, hyphenation, pronunciation, word meaning, and usage notes
    • Explain the terms used in the dictionary guide
    • Find a word without knowing its spelling
    • Find the definition of a word, its synonyms and its antonyms
  • Acquire knowledge and skills regarding the use of nouns
    • Identify the classes of nouns
    • Use the plural form of nouns
    • Recognize the possessive form
  • Acquire knowledge and skills regarding the use of pronouns in a sentence
    • Identify the antecedent in order to use the correct pronouns
    • Identify the personal pronouns and their forms in a sentence
    • Differentiate between who and whom
    • Properly use the relative pronouns in a sentence
    • Identify pronouns that take special singular and plural forms
    • Recognize other pronouns
  • Acquire knowledge and skills regarding the use of verbs in a sentence
    • Recognize the difference between action and linking verbs
    • Write verbs in the past, present, and future tenses correctly
    • Use the perfect tenses when necessary
    • Explain the progressive tense
    • Recognize the imperative mode
    • Recognize the role of helping or auxiliary verbs
    • Use modals correctly in sentences
    • Recognize the different verb conjugations
    • Use the negative and question form
    • Recognize the difference between the active and passive voice
    • Use the troublesome verbs correctly
  • Acquire knowledge and skills regarding adjectives and adverbs
    • Recognize an adjective
    • Use the positive, comparative, and superlative form of the adjective
    • Recognize an adverb
    • Use the positive, comparative, and superlative form of the adverb
  • Acquire knowledge and skills regarding the use of the most common prepositions and conjunctions
    • Demonstrate when to use prepositions in sentences
    • Recognize the most frequently used prepositions
    • Recognize a conjunction
    • Demonstrate when and how to use conjunctions
