Cannabis Cultivation Technician program to be offered by CCNB!

It’s official! Starting on November 27th 2017, CCNB will offer its first cohort of the medical Cannabis Cultivation Technician program. This 12-week program will be offered in English at CCNB’s Dieppe Campus in collaboration with CCNB’s Campbellton Campus.

This training is offered in partnership with the department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour and Organigram Holding Inc., a Moncton based company looking to hire a highly skilled workforce. Twenty-five applications will be accepted in the first group. People interested in this exciting training opportunity can submit a letter of interest and a resume, to the following email: cultivation.tech@ccnb.ca. The deadline to apply is November 13th before midnight.

“When it comes to the sale of cannabis in our province, our government’s priority is to ensure the product stays out of the hands of youth, and out of the hands of criminals. Respecting those two goals, and the health and safety of New Brunswickers, is of the utmost importance as we explore the economic opportunities that this new industry has to offer”, stated Post-Secondary Education Minister Roger Melanson. “That is why we are pleased to partner with CCNB and Organigram to support the responsible development of a trained, professional, skilled workforce for this industry”, added Melanson.

The Province of New Brunswick is investing over $70 thousand dollars to provide for the full tuition cost for the first cohort of students in this program. This will assist the government in identifying the degree of interest for the program, and it will serve as a pilot for CCNB in the delivery of this new training. In addition, the Province will continue to work with Organigram to assist the company with their future recruitment and training needs.

CCNB’s Cannabis Cultivation Technician program is designed to develop an understanding of all aspects of the cultivation of medicinal cannabis and of the process and factors influencing the quality of the products. Cannabis cultivation technicians work at a highly regulated production site.

“With an eye on the future of cannabis production in Canada, we are thrilled to be part of this innovative, forward-thinking initiative, says Greg Engel, CEO, Organigram. Our own team is growing as the demand for high-quality cannabis continues to grow, so we know how important it is to develop skilled, well-trained teams of individuals who can support the production of exceptional products. We look forward to welcoming many of these students to the Organigram team."

This 12-week CCNB program has been designed to meet the needs of the industry by focusing on the development of basic employability skills. With this specialized training, graduates will be provided with knowledge and skills in the field of medical cannabis production that will enable them to contribute to the rapid growth of the industry, including the partner of the first delivery, Organigram. The graduates will become technicians in medical cannabis production. They will be trained on the different stages of production in a controlled environment.

"Today, we are launching an innovative program, the first of its kind in Canada. This 12-week horticultural based program will focus on the particularities of the cannabis plant as it pertains to the medical cannabis industry. Graduates will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge that will enable them to gain meaningful employment within this new and exciting industry. The medical cannabis industry is growing in New Brunswick and we are pleased to be able to support it through this industry-designed training program," said the Executive director of continuing education for CCNB, Michel Doucet.
